“Funerals should be a celebration! Your mom isn’t suffering anymore!” The woman said it to me and I stared at her, then turned, walking away before I could say the razor-sharp comeback sitting on the tip of my tongue. My tongue’s tip was already riddled with canker sores into the first hour of the viewing. The people, making their way through the line, getting to me with their, ‘She’s in a better places,’ and the, ‘But it’s such a relief, too, isn’t its?’ And my favorite, the, ‘You’ll get to see her again someday, because she’s with Gods.’
Yeah, music to an atheist’s ears.
Then, a little old woman from my mother’s church walked up to me. She held my hands in hers, looked into my eyes and simply said, “Oh, I loved your mother. I am going to miss her so.”
Yeah. That’s what I needed to hear. It’s what we need to hear.
Thank you for this post.
